Can Gio, 5th November, 2013

To Ms. Vi – Program Officer – Child Development Programme,

I am the mother of Bach Minh Tien who is currently a third year student at Technical Training University of Ho Chi Minh City. I acknowledged your warm visit last week while I had been away and only Tien’s father was at home.

On the behalf of our family, I am writing to express our gratitude to Saigon Children’s Charity. It is your enthusiasm, restless effort and a generous fund of SCC that encourages Tien to pursue his dream of studying.

Mother of Bach Minh Tien - The author of this letter

Back from when Tien was in secondary school, he spent half of a day to pick up snails, crabs to help his family, and he reserved the rest of the time for schooling. His father is 67 years old and has experienced severe sickness, so he cannot work anymore. That leaves me to become the main person who can earn a living for the whole family. Our family expenses depend on my monthly wage of VND 2,000,000 ($100) as a kitchen porter. At the beginning of 2014, I will enter my retirement and our life since then will become tougher.

Tien is always a nice child. He was granted admission from two prestigious universities (Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry – Natural Resources and Ecotourism; and Technical Training University – Information Technology). Since we do not have money to support him, he decided to go to Technical Training University. Tien will study in 4 years and a half. Fortunately, a lecturer has kindly let him stay with her family. Every day, he walks for 2 km to his University and only comes back home in Can Gio twice a month. We are all aware that there is still a long way for him to go. And thanks to SCC’s scholarships, he has gone through a half of it.

Bach Minh Tien on the scholaship delivery day.

From the bottom of our hearts, my family and I hope that Tien will be able to receive the scholarships from SCC so that he will be stronger on his way to reach his dream in the future.

Finally, I would like to send my sincerest thanks to SCC and will all SCC staff the best.

Tien’s Mother

Trần Thị Thúy Phượng.

*More information about Bach Minh Tien and his family:

Tien is currently a third year student in Information Technology Couse at Technical Training University of Ho Chi Minh City. Tien is the only child in the family. His father is old and unable to work due to suffering from a high blood pressure. His mother is the only person in the family working where she works with the Youth Volunteers with a salary of just 2,1m per month. His current house was built a long time ago with support from The Youth Volunteers including the roof, wall and floor tiles. The old-fashioned television and motorbike are the most precious things in his house. Tien was supported by SCC from the 10th grade and continues to today. Even though he does not need to pay for his school tuition fee, but for English and Information Technology credit courses each credit costs around 90.000 VND with each subject needing 2 or 3 credits. Therefore, SCC’s support is a valuable encouragement to motivate his efforts.
