Friend of SCC Autumn 2013

I came to know about Saigon Children’s Charity (SCC) by chance when I was searching for a volunteer organisation to work with during the summer of my gap year. It was a fortuitous chance as until now I am still amazed at how my three months were filled with such fun and meaningful experiences. As I had participated in several charity activities during my high school years before, I imagined myself in the same places again: singing and playing with children, teaching them crafts and English, running around with boxes filled with gifts and other miscellaneous logistics. With SCC, it was a completely different picture and I was greeted with an entirely new perspective that I had ever experienced before: being behind-the-scenes and experiencing a typical working day in SCC office.

As a fresh high school graduate with neither much experience nor qualification, my first few days at SCC office were a real challenge. I fumbled around with so many folders and files to read, so much information to process before I could start working on my assigned project. Thankfully, I received a lot of help from many of the staff members and slowly found myself in the swing of things. There were times when I was racing against the deadline to assist the staff members in completing various tasks before an event can be put into place. That was when I fully appreciated the hard work by many dedicated people behind each of SCC’s success. I found myself working alongside the most wonderful staff members and volunteers, and a great friendship that was formed along the way. I never imagined I could enjoy sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours before, and yet I found joy in the smallest tasks upon which I was entrusted. Furthermore, when I had the chance to talk to two children from Thang Long School about how SCC had changed their lives, I was immensely proud that I could contribute, even a little, to making that change a reality for many other disadvantaged children in Vietnam.

I laughed and learned so much, and I’m so glad for the time I spent in SCC. I could already see myself signing up again for as a SCC volunteer in future college breaks!
